Zone Focused City Grit

Coffee Patio

For my next photo hunt, I went back to Willimantic, CT to look for some city grit. Also, it was time to practice taking pictures using zone focusing. All of the pictures in this post were taken without “focusing”. I used only one vintage lens not equipped with autofocus. Instead, the lens was set up to a focus zone. Once the zone was set, the camera pretty much became a point and shoot camera. Very little post editing was done, except for the photo above. The pictures were shot in RAW.

The goal was to take as many “in-focused” photographs as possible. Using lenses with built in autofocus has been a source of frustration, as many pictures taken end up with the wrong part of the picture being “in-focus”. The take away feeling with this happening is that, taking lots of pictures to get one “good” picture seems like a monumental waste of time.

It seems that commissioning graffiti and murals has become quite popular in many cities. It is a good thing for Willimantic. The city looks like it’s falling apart; although, the town has a few revitalization projects, many buildings look like they are just about ready to be condemned. Virtual reality leaves the world in disrepair.

This “zone focusing” thing is the bomb. Once set, it’s so easy to put my efforts into composition.
